SPRAY PAINTING

Ref: OHS Regulation 2001

Clause 177 of the OHS Regulation 2001 covers particular control measures for spray painting in booths.
Clause 178 provides particular risk control measures for spray painting outside booths.
Clause 179 covers electrostatic spray painting.

For spray painting in spray booths the employer must ensure that:

· spray painting is carried out in a spray booth, and
· no-one other than the person spray painting is in the booth during spray painting, and
· any person that is in the booth during spray painting is wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.

For spray painting outside booths the employer must ensure that:

· spray painting is carried out in the open air at least six (6) metres from every building and from every other thing that may obstruct ventilation, and ensure that spray painting is effectively isolated from every other process in which persons are employed and that is within six (6) metres and;
· is effectively isolated from all plant, machinery and equipment that is or may become a source of ignition within two (2) metres as measured vertically from above and six (6) metres in all other directions; and
· any person carrying out spray painting is wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.

If it is not reasonably practicable for an employer to ensure that the spray painting is carried out in the open air as required, the employer must ensure that;

· the place where spray painting is carried out is adequately ventilated (by natural or mechanical ventilation), and
· the spray painting is effectively isolated in accordance with the Regulation (clause 178(3)).
