A pictorial inner west nature tour

For many years I didn't know if there was a place I could call home. Then I moved to the inner west ...

King St aka Mecca

Pushbikers are always pedalling up and down the main strip of Sydney's premier cafe zone, usually without helmets. Tsk tsk. King St can be a busy place. Near-gridlocks on weekend evenings are routine. Best to take the train or better still, live nearby. You don't need to go to the outback to find a traditional Aussie dunny. Just venture into the "outback" of almost any Newtown cafe. People-watching in cafes is a popular sport as the diverse wildlife wander along King Street.
You need balls to traverse the sometimes alien planes of King St. Xmas 1998 photo. George's in King St - a tacky, Alexander's type cafe closed down in 99. Still, it had good aircon for those hot summer days. Who said that Newtown types are heathens and decadent scumbags? Repent and quaff two decaf soya milk cuppaccinos, my child, and all will be forgiven.

Enmore Road & Norton Street

Proof that the Enmore theatre hosted the Stones in early 2003. Hundreds crowded outside hoping to hear a few bars, with the obligatory media scrum. In 2002 Enmore & Newtown were full of motor scooters. Then everyone realised motorbikes were better value for money. In late 2002 the transvestite shop shut down only to be replaced by an accountancy practice. A sign of the times? The Godzilla mural just off Enmore Road. You won't see too many like this in the 'burbs. Take it from this suburban refugee.
Of course there are lots of upmarket shops for the discerning consumer. It was crazy on Norton, 25 June 06, when Australia played Italy in the 2nd round of the World Cup! I actually managed to keep the camera steady with lower shutter speed this time. Everyone stood around this big screen. Another shaky, but lucky, photograph of Norton St ... just like the last-gasp Italian win.

The inner west and thereabouts

You can be sure there were thousands of inner-westies amongst the 250,000 protesting against the Iraq war in Hyde Park in early 2003. A haven for amateur and professional photographers alike. However, residing in a predominantly left-wing area comes at a price. No, you don't need to visit the outback to find material suited to Drysdale-esque rendering. Stanmore Road as viewed from Newington Bridge will do just fine. The Anzac bridge is almost as much of a Sydney icon as the Coat Hanger or Luna Park. Well, it is to inner westies, anyway. (ok, this isn't sydey's Luna Park face ... just a little artistic licence :-)
Just a couple of ks from King Street the inner west almost looks like suburbia. Almost ... This sunset over Stanmore just goes to show that you don't need to go to Queensland to see stunning natural wonders - but it helps :-) Renovation fever is alive and well here, as with elsewhere else *yawn* David Attenborough would have a field day with the wildlife of the inner west. This curious specimen was captured at the Newington Hotel.
