Cruise around New Zealand

Photos from 5 - 19 Dec 2007
I had not been on a holiday for 15 years and I soon found out that cruises are an alternate universe, essentially an exercise in mindless hedonism, where "achievement" means winning a medal at ping pong or finding a handsome stranger.

Displaced water washed from the the ship sparkling in the sunlight

Earl, a regular cruiser, catching up on a few winks mid-cigar

I fell in love on the cruise - with the 24/7 buffet. You could go up there for a munch or a cuppa at any time night or day. It broke my heart to say goodbye :(
Due to the above-mentioned love affair I had to play a lot of ping pong to work off the excess calories.

Cruising into Milford Sound (aka Fiordland) was like finding yourself within a huge postcard

More Milford Sound eye candy

Proof that I was actually there - a fascinating juxtaposition between extreme beauty and an ugly mug :)

My first shot on the mainland - a church in Dunedin, our first stop after 5 days on the water

This cloud hung over the hills of Dunedin all day as though it was solid

A lovely shot taken by Max of a park by the Avon River in Christchurch

With the famous Wizard of New Zealand (he pulled a serious face for the photo)

An example of the beautiful art deco architecture in Napier

Phar Lap was a Kiwi stallion - one of many famous New Zealanders claimed by Australia to be its own. His skeleton is in Wellington's Te Papa Musuem.
It looks like someone in Wellington forgot to clean up these fallen columns. Tsk!

An obligatory touristy shot of a wood carving at the Tamaki Maori Village out of Tauranga.

Unfortunately I never had the chance to see the geysers of Rotorua.

The Tasman Sea got a bit rough on the way back to Sydney as shown by the wave pictured on the left.

At times the water in the pool would crash against the side of the pool and spray several metres into the air.
